Good Reads Wednesday

by Jeff Miller of Artisan Family of Wines (Seven Artisans, Sly Dog Cellars, Red Côte Rosé)

jeff-smEvery Wednesday I post my recommendations of the best of last week’s postings concerning wine, whether blogs or news.  I list them in the order I read them, so you shouldn’t infer anything about the order in which I list these posts.

Australia’s wine industry in peril from climate change

Research by Macquarie University alerts Australian wine growers to consider new varieties of grapes to fend off the impact of climate change

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/nov/27/hunter-valley-wine-growing-climate-change

I’ve been harping on the importance of adjusting our grape varieties to our climate, which in most of California is quite a bit hotter than the regions of the world where most of our grapes come from.  Now an Australian study is making a similar point in the context of global warming.

Wine Sales Lush Despite Recession

Mintel: Wine market has grown 20% despite recession

I don’t know how people make this stuff up.  I can’t imagine anyone in the business thinks things are rosy in the wine business these days.  The figures I see tell a different story:  wine sales are down, particularly in the higher priced parts of the market.

Suisun Valley, where our vineyards are located, is highlighted here.  The AVA is, hopefully, happening in a way it hasn’t for its first 25 years.

How can a wine be better than 100 points?

Steve Heimoff

What does a 100 point rating really mean?  Or what do ratings in general mean?  This is a real interesting discussion of how at least one rater goes about ratings wines, and the pitfalls of any rating, especially those that try to take into account how the wine will age.

Basics of “palate” training

Winesooth.com

A survey of sorts of how to go about training your palate.  This one is noteworthy in that it concentrates, as much as possible, on the basics in an objective way.  Many could learn a lot by following these simple steps.
